From expanding regional access to orchestral music to embracing cutting-edge digital tools, QSO is pioneering a people-centered, music-driven approach to both artistic excellence and operational sustainability.

In conversation with Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s (QSO) Chief Financial Officer and Deputy CEO, Rodolphe Deus, we explore how QSO is navigating the evolving performing arts landscape and leveraging technology to support its mission.

Can you share QSO’s overarching operational vision?

QSO aims to be one of Queensland’s leading cultural institutions, recognised for artistic excellence and deep community impact. Our vision is to expand access to orchestral music, inspiring and connecting audiences statewide.

What are some of the unique challenges facing performing arts organisations today?

While challenges have long been a reality for performing arts organisations, they are especially pronounced today, shaped by rapid changes in audience behaviours, economic pressures and the need to engage broader, more diverse communities. Modern performing arts organisations must navigate an increasingly complex balance between financial sustainability and artistic integrity, all while meeting evolving audience expectations. This demands that we listen, adapt and innovate to stay relevant. Addressing these challenges requires creativity, strategic partnerships and new revenue and operating models to support both long-term viability and creative freedom.

How is QSO responding to these challenges?

QSO is addressing these challenges with a people-centered, music-driven approach that combines strategic partnerships, thoughtful and engaging programming and a commitment to accessibility across Queensland. At the heart of our mission is the belief in the power of music to unite, inspire and uplift. By expanding our regional touring initiatives, QSO brings live orchestral music to communities beyond Brisbane, sharing the joy of live performance with audiences who might otherwise have limited access to such experiences.

Can you describe some specific technology-driven initiatives QSO has undertaken to improve operational efficiencies?

To drive greater operational efficiency across QSO, we have prioritised a comprehensive shift to cloud-based systems, enabling seamless integration across all departments and ensuring the flexibility to work from anywhere. This digital transformation spans critical areas, including orchestra management, ticketing and finance resulting in a more streamlined and accessible operational infrastructure.

In addition, we have implemented advanced data-driven and business intelligence tools, such as PowerBI, to enhance our decision-making processes.

How important is technology to a cultural institution like QSO?

Technology is essential to QSO’s mission. It bridges tradition with innovation, allowing us to preserve the art form while remaining relevant in a fast-changing world. Digital tools have not only improved internal efficiencies but also expanded our capacity to engage with new and existing audiences more inclusively.

Veracity delivered a technology roadmap for future business transformation. How does this roadmap align with QSO’s long-term goals?

Veracity’s roadmap aligns seamlessly with QSO’s vision of excellence, sustainable growth and expanded reach. This partnership supports QSO’s commitment to accessibility and operational sustainability by prioritising digital platforms and data-driven strategies.
